Monday’s talk show recap

Potentially catty comments: One, yikes, TV must add more than 10 pounds! Or else it’s just that when you’re carrying the bulk of the load in back, it’s particularly tough. Two, okay, is it me, or is Oprah gaining? Or is it that they are airbrushing the heck out of her butt on her magazine covers? Or is it the difference between video and print?

Kirstie mentioned that she still wants to lose 25 or 30 more, so I’m guessing it has to do a lot with the camera being unkind to women who aren’t stick-thin.

Back to the shows. Kirstie Alley was hilarious as usual. View the slide show for a great recap.

There was also a handful of other diet stories. There were a lot of giggles about a woman using sex to lose weight, but I liked the story (not online, alas) about a guy who lost over 200 lbs just by switching to healthy versions of what he liked (veggie pizza instead of meat pizza, baked chips instead of french fries, etc).

The Tyra show did more to aggravate me than to inspire me. To paraphrase, I’ve (not) met Oprah, and Tyra Banks is no Oprah. In other words, Tyra isn’t exactly the greatest communicator. Here’s my favorite confusing comment:

I wanted to understand first-hand the struggles of being overweight in an unforgiving society because I am completely 100 percent aware that the image I have put out as a model goes totally against acceptance of everything, that everything is beautiful. I understand that.

I’m glad one of us does!

The other thing is that I know she was well meaning, and I realize this wasn’t a real research project, but boy did she stack the deck. Her hidden camera didn’t really do a good job of showing people laughing at her, though she said they did. Halfway through the show, I started to wonder if her reaction wasn’t so much about people making fun of fat people as it was people who weren’t gawking at her the way she was used to. I wonder whether someone who wasn’t used to supermodel status would have felt the same.

Also, the blind dates were a bit absurd. I have no doubt that the guys weren’t happy about their “date” with the 350-lb Tyra, but no 350-lb person would go on a blind date with that fact omitted, as Tyra clearly did. And the questions she asked? You have to be kidding me. Like:

Would you feel strange walking down the street with me?

Who asks that on a date?

So, I’m sure the Tyra fans loved it, but I’ll stick with Oprah and Dr. Phil at this point. And I’m eager to see what Oprah and Rachael Ray wind up doing!

Vanessa Minnillo did the same thing on the “Entertainment Tonight”.

I wonder Vanessa Minnillo underwent a startling transformation for our cameras and went undercover on the streets of New York City as a 350-pound woman to get a reality check on the every day prejudices facing America’s weight-challenged women.

Then, with the help of more than one person, Vanessa Minnillo donned the fat suit over a pair of jeans and T-shirt to disguise as a 350-pound woman and needed assistance to get dressed, not to mention the effort required to tie her shoes. (When Vanessa tries on her fat suit, she arrival has worn her cap of the same color as her T-shirt which has been packed in the fat suit.)
